STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING ACADEMY
Have you ever wondered how a building or bridge stands up. How these majestic structures are able to defy gravity and the forces of nature such as wind, rain, snow and earthquakes to house our homes, our offices and our public spaces. And also why sometimes they fail and collapse.
This is the Structural Engineering Academy. We help students, engineers, architects and builders to understand the methods of designing building and bridge structures.
You may be a prospective student of the subject of structural engineering and wish to fast-track your understanding and gain an advantage prior to embarking on perhaps your own university course. Or you may have just graduated from an undergraduate degree course and wish to consolidate your knowledge with the aspects of the university course that really matter in practice. Or you could be a young practicing Structural Engineer that wishes to prepare yourself to undertake Professional Qualifying Examinations like that offered by the Institution of Structural Engineers United Kingdom, the IStructE. Or you could be an architect that wishes to gain a greater understanding of structural engineering, a field that the great architects of the past knew loads about. Or you could be a builder with a technical and analytical inclination that wishes to really understand how the buildings that you are building are really designed to stand. Or finally you could just be a curious person with an innate Engineer within you.
These courses have been designed with you in mind, to hasten your understanding, your knowledge and comprehension of the subject.
Do you yearn to understand what makes a building or bridge stand up, what makes a building or bridge fall down, what makes them move and what makes them stand the test of time. Do you come across books that are either too mathematical or too conceptual. Do you wish you could have a book or course that simply connected the math to the concepts.
Do you wish to gain this knowledge from a group of practical engineers and theoreticians that have learned the techniques and best practices within the trade to conceptualize, scheme, analyze and design tall buildings up to a 100-storeys and churn out designs for 50 and 60-storey buildings every few months or so.
In these courses, drawing from these experiences, we have consolidated the wealth of information that is included in a field such as this so that you may find the shortest possible route to gaining the understanding of the art and science structural engineering. There are literally thousands of books on the subject in the public domain and to delve into them and fully understand them would practically take a lifetime, if not more. Not to mention the fact that many of them are no longer useful with today’s technological advancements. Many of the methods and techniques that are taught a couple of decades ago are frankly obsolete. Technological advances have meant that we would do things differently now, more efficiently with better software and better procedures. So even though the governing principles that form the fundamentals and pillars of the subject have not really changed from the time of Galileo Galilei, Robert Hooke and Sir Isaac Newton in the 17th century, Leonhard Euler and Daniel Bernoulli in the 18th century and Claude-Louis Navier in the 19th century, technology has, and thus have our approaches to the design of buildings and bridges. So these are crash courses to essentially get you up to speed. To get you state of the art. It’s a platform from which you could then choose any further business path in the field of structural engineering that you may wish to embark on. You could be a practicing structural engineer or architect working in a design office, or you could be an entrepreneur with your own design office winning and delivering projects, you could be working on permanent works for developers or temporary works for contractors. These courses would be a rigorous foundation from which you can then apply what you have learned to then gain experience and finally wisdom in your chosen business or line of work. These courses will give you theoretical knowledge, experience and confidence in real-life practical structural engineering.
